A short history of central coast council

In 2019 an extraordinary deficit of close to $500m was discovered in Council finances, despite the NSW Audit Office having had oversight of the Council’s accounts annually. The reason given was that restricted funds had been used for unrestricted purposes. The Councillors and Mayor were suspended as a result of the deficit, an interim Administrator was put in power in place of the Councillors, and a formal inquiry was held. In the interim local council elections were held in September 2021 across NSW. Not on the Central Coast. The inquiry resulted in the democratically elected Councillors and Mayor being sacked and a full-time Administrator, Rik Hart, appointed until September 2024, when Council elections will again be held - a gap of five years with NO democratic.

In 2022 Council held its own poll asking Central Coast residents whether they wanted to reduce the number of wards to three from five, thereby reducing the number of Councillors from fifteen to nine, three per ward.
